Newark, New Jersey—The city is in mourning as preparations are underway for the funeral of Officer Joseph Azcona, a 26-year-old police officer who was fatally shot while on duty.
On Thursday evening, Azcona’s family, friends, and colleagues gathered at a funeral home on Wilson Avenue for his wake, offering prayers and support to one another as they grieved the tragic loss.
To honor his service and sacrifice, Governor Phil Murphy has ordered flags across New Jersey to be flown at half-staff on Friday. Azcona’s funeral will take place at 10:30 a.m. on March 14, 2025, at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark.
A Tragic Loss in the Line of Duty
Officer Joseph Azcona was killed last Friday while investigating illegal firearms near Christ Assembly Lutheran Church. Before he could even exit his vehicle, he was gunned down, allegedly by a 14-year-old armed with an automatic weapon.
The horrifying incident unfolded in front of the church, where hundreds of people gathered Wednesday to pay their respects. Officer Shaquilla Brown reflected on the tragedy, emphasizing that Azcona’s name will not be forgotten.
“This week is gonna be tough. Next week is gonna be tough. The week after that. The next week, the next month, the next year… Joey is going down in history,” Brown said, highlighting the deep impact of his loss.
A second officer was also shot in the incident and remains in the hospital recovering from injuries.
A Hero Remembered
Azcona, who had been with the Newark Police Department for years, was promoted to detective two years ago and was serving in the intelligence unit. He was the first Newark officer in over 20 years to be killed in the line of duty.
Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda spoke of Azcona’s dedication, calling him a “true cop” with a “heart of gold.”
“That day we did see the worst of humankind. Our brother was taken too soon,” Miranda said.
Legal Proceedings
The 14-year-old suspect has been charged with multiple crimes, including murder, attempted murder, and possession of illegal weapons. However, under New Jersey law, a 14-year-old cannot be tried as an adult under any circumstance.
As Newark says goodbye to one of its own, the community remains united in grief, determined to honor Officer Azcona’s memory and legacy.
